About Sore Throats…..

>Is it a simple sore throat or is it something more serious?

* A sore throat can be caused by various things.

* Some are safe to treat at home, some require diagnosis and treatment by a medical professional.

Sore throats are usually safe to treat at home when caused by:

  • The common cold
  • A common cough
  • Chronic allergies e.g. hay fever, perennial rhinitis etc.

Sore throats require professional medical help (i.e. go to your GP/doctor) when caused by:

  • Covid-19
  • Tonsillitis
  • ‘Quincy’
  • ‘Strep. throat’
  • Laryngitis
  • Sudden or acute allergies or allergic reactions

> Go to the doctor for examination, treatment and advice if your child or baby has any of these symptoms.

  • Difficulty or pain swallowing
  • Serious pain e.g. crying
  • Pus on tonsils or around back of throat
  • Large swollen glands, especially if one-sided.
  • A rash, especially around the mouth or on the face.
  • Off food for more than a day.
  • Off liquids for any time at all (children can become dehydrated in only a few hours).
