**Open now for Student Early-Bird Booking (great value!)**

Read on to discover why and how you can help….!

This new course will include a look at a range of common seaweeds that can be used for as tonics for our health and as skincare.

Learn to use seaweeds, wherever you live:
People can do this course by using dried seaweeds bought from shops or suppliers (the packets sold in shops as edible seaweeds are suitable) or collect and harvest the seaweeds themselves from the coast (if it is possible to do this where you live).

We will look at taking seaweeds internally as health-enhancing tonics as well as making seaweed extracts we can apply to our skin and hair (using the extracts on their own or combining them in recipes and formulae to make lovely creams, balms etc.).

The skincare & hair-care recipes will vary from ‘just making something nice’ (e.g. adding our seaweed extracts to natural cosmetics to enrich them) to making more therapeutic treatments (e.g. poultices, medicinal seaweed baths etc.).

Sharing my experience from my herbal medicine clinic: I love seaweed and often used seaweed extracts in my clinic. I will share my experience of using seaweed to help people with a range of medical conditions. It is remarkable how much it can help, often with serious diseases and health issues.

For each featured seaweed a detailed look, including:
~ List of nutrients and significant compounds in the seaweed e.g. lignans, alginates, vitamins, minerals etc.
~ Uses as tonics and medicines e.g. psoriasis treatment; tonic for digestion; cough remedy etc.
~ How to make health boosting tonics from them (for internal use).
~ Skincare treatments and products to make from them.

~ Dried & powdered
~ Alcohol tinctures
~ Infused oils
~ Infused vinegars
~ Glycerites

We will look at recipe techniques for applying seaweed via the skin & hair (from total beginner to more advanced examples) and formulations these extracts can be used in:

  • ~ How to prepare a traditional, medicinal Seaweed Baths: cooking and preparing the seaweeds for full body baths, foot baths & handbaths.

  • ~ Face, nail and hair masks

  • ~ Emulsion creams (moisturisers, problem skin treatments etc.)

    ~ Hair strengthening treatments

    ~ Hair conditioning treatments

~ Water-free creams for the face and body

    ~ Seaweed facial serums

    ~ Gels

    ~ And more….

Best practice for using seaweeds:
Best before dates:

~ Safety info (including pregnancy) for internal tonics and topical treatments (so you can use your jar of face cream or bathe in it without worry!)

Meet the Seaweeds: Watch the videos from the shoreline

I always think it’s important, interesting and fascinating to meet the plants behind our products. It doesn’t matter whether or not you live by the coast or get the chance to do any of this yourself, it’s a beautiful part of learning to work with, understand and appreciate your ingredients. It truly deepens our connection to nature and the plant ingredients that we work with.

  • Videos & photos of various commonly-used varieties of seaweeds to help you start to notice them and identify them.

  • See how they grow.

  • Learn how to collect them properly (they have to be cut and harvested, you can’t use the stuff that washes up on the beach because it’s already starting to rot!)

  • Learn how to collect them sustainably (how to cut them so that you do not damage them and encourage them to grow back again).

  • When to collect seaweeds: some grow all year round, others are only available for a month or two.

  • The moon, tides and seaweeds: the key times of each month to find them and work with them (they can’t be collected any time you want because they will be under the sea!!).

  • How to dry seaweeds.

  • How to store them.

  • Awareness of any legislation about collecting seaweeds [this varies from country to country].

Seaweeds are remarkable & hugely inspiring.

If you feel over-whelmed by the bad news cycle about the environment then please consider learning about seaweeds, if purely to show the huge practical and abundant source they are. If we start to get organised then we can begin to work with them to make non-polluting plastics, make rich food sources & supplements, help to restore & regenerate the health of the oceans (and bring back thriving marine life), nourish and enrich soil that has become depleted and damaged on the land, and of course make medicines and beautiful natural skincare treatments too! They are one of the most inspiring natural substances to begin to learn about. Doing this brings great hope for our future and life developing in a positive way so that human beings improve and enhance our environment.

  > The course will start at the end of October 2023.

The reason this student early-bird is being offered so far in advance of the start date of the course is because of the nature of working with seaweeds: I want to show you all the seaweeds (whether you want to try collecting them yourself or simply use them from packets of dried seaweed is up to you, either if fine) and this means very advance planning and preparation! Some of the seaweeds are only found growing at set times of the year, for most seaweeds they can only be properly collected and found twice a month when the tide is at its lowest (that’s the full moon or the new moon). The rest of the time they are under the sea so I can’t get them then!

This means that there are a limited number of days until October when it will be possible to go along the shoreline to find, film & collect the seaweeds.

So, for this course, I need to work much further in advance than usual because I am working with the element of the sea (not just the rain or sun!) so it’s a bit more complicated.
